Inflation, health, sovereignty: the Smith administration presents its priorities

This new speech, written by the Prime Minister’s Office and read by Deputy Governor Salma Lakhani, summarizes the United Conservative Government’s priorities for the upcoming parliamentary session.

The Smith administration’s priority will be to fight inflation with cash payments to families, the elderly and those in need.

The majority of Albertans must drive to get to work, shop for groceries, and go to appointments or family activities. The government will take immediate action by suspending the province’s gas tax for six monthsexplains the lieutenant governor.

She clarified that the natural gas rebate will become a permanent measure. The province will also work with electricity suppliers to ensure prices don’t suddenly spike during the winter.

The speech also includes health pledges but no specific actions to reduce waiting times and overcrowding in hospitals.

The government intends to continue supporting two key sectors of the economy, oil and agriculture, as well as emerging industries, notably through a digital media tax credit.

Finally, the Smith administration maintains its commitment to defend Alberta against what it sees as Ottawa interference in its jurisdictions by enacting Alberta’s sovereignty in a United Canada Bill.

This bill will be presented to the House at the end of the Speech from the Throne. It is designed to allow the province to block the application of certain federal laws or policies.

On Monday, the government’s leader in the Legislative Assembly, Joseph Schow, presented a draft legislative program for the parliamentary session that begins Tuesday. The first proposed legislation concerns the sovereignty of Alberta in a unified Canada.
