Indian Wells: Félix Auger-Aliassime is running out of magic

After an impressive win in singles the day before, Quebec’s Félix Auger-Aliassime attempted to continue his adventure in Indian Wells in doubles with Denis Shapovalov. However, the Canadian pair lost in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

“FAA” pulled off a minor miracle on Tuesday, saving six match points to defeat American Tommy Paul, but that magic didn’t follow. He and “Shapo” were defeated in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 by Matthew Ebden and Rohan Bopanna.

The latter also knows Shapovalov very well, as they were doubles partners for a few years and even reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open in 2020. The Indian and his Australian team-mate managed the only two breaks of the meeting, frustrating the Canadians four times.

Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov had only played one match together at the California tournament, easily beating Ben Shelton and Holger Rune in the first round. They then took advantage of the package from Cameron Norrie and Lucas Miedler to advance to the Quarterfinals.

In the singles, the Montrealer meets the first seeded and former number 1 in the world, Carlos Alcaraz, on Thursday evening. Auger-Aliassime has won all three duels between the two young stars so far.
