Immigrants, an economic wealth, more educated than ever

“This selection by points respects the level of education and favors young people with a university degree,” explains Gilles Grenier.

A doctorate automatically brings 25 points, a bachelor only 15 points. Below 35 are 12 points, studying in Canada also brings an advantage in terms of “adaptability”.

Below 67 points, the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship does not bother to examine the file. Above, the ministry can send an “invitation” to the candidate when they enter one of the 347 professions addressed by the Express Entry program: engineers, principals, insurers, architects, veterinarians, firefighters, etc

Overqualified Immigrants

This skilled immigration system does not necessarily guarantee successful integration into economic life.

In its report, Statistics Canada shows that more than a quarter of immigrants with a bachelor’s degree or higher are overqualified for the jobs they hold. According to the organization, this is a long-standing problem, particularly in the health sector, combined with the challenge of recognizing diplomas obtained abroad.
