Despite only playing two seasons, Stéphane Richer’s career in the QMJHL has been remarkable.

The new Hall of Famer said in an interview with Jean-Charles Lajoie on Thursday.

“I am very touched and very surprised by all of this. I only played at junior level for two years. I never thought that one day I would get a call from Gilles Courteau, but it’s a very kind gesture and I appreciate it. I am also happy for my parents who made many sacrifices. It’s a special day.

Richer averaged an impressive 196 points in 124 games with the Granby Bisons and the Chicoutimi Saguenéens. However, he gives a lot of credit to his teammates.

“I had never looked at my stats. When I moved to the junior level at age 19, I found myself with the Canadiens. I never looked at statistics. Today I look at it and I see that I had the chance to play with very great hockey players in Chicoutimi. We put in an incredible performance.”

Good words for Caufield

The last 50-goal scorer in Canadiens history also opened up about his former team. He wants Cole Caufield to take his title away from him.

“I want it with all my heart. I’m sick of being told I’m last. I know he’s a born goalscorer and a goalscorer. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the next one to score 40 or 50 points. The future looks bright. I’m happy for the Canadiens fans.

Richer also shared a tasty anecdote. On his NHL debut, he was put in his place by a certain Larry Robinson.

“It marked me for a lifetime. I took my training jersey and threw it in the basket, but it didn’t work. You had to place it on the basket facing the Canadiens logo. It took three seconds and I got the message. That was the respect of playing for the Canadians.
