Longueuil – A Montreal-area Hydro-Quebec employee accused of industrial espionage has appeared in court for the first time since he was accused of sending trade secrets to China.
Yuesheng Wang, 35, appeared Monday in the Quebec court in Longueuil via videoconference from RCMP headquarters in Montreal with the help of a translator.
This Candiac, Quebec resident was accused of obtaining a trade secret for the benefit of the People’s Republic of China. This is the first time in Canada that someone has been charged with industrial espionage under the Security of Information Act.
Mr. Wang was also charged with three offenses under the Criminal Code: fraudulent and unauthorized use of a computer; obtaining a trade secret by deception, lying or other fraudulent means; and breach of trust.
The crown refused to bail in Mr Wang’s case, fearing he was a risk of absconding.
The case has been adjourned until Friday, when more evidence will be released and the parties will discuss scheduling a bail hearing.
The Quebec energy utility said Wang is a researcher who has been working on battery materials with the center of excellence for electrification and energy storage in transportation, known as CETEES.
