How does Sonar+D (Sónar Lisboa) explore new technologies?

ISonar+D takes place from March 31st to April 2nd together with Sónar Lisboa. This meeting point in Estufa Fria’s greenhouse will create a dialogue between art, music and technology around a series of exhibitions and performances.

Sonar+D, a side event of Sonar Lisbon, will be at home on April 31st, 1st and 2nd at the Estufa Fria Botanical Garden. A real place of multidisciplinary convergence, the space will host a series of artistic, musical and technological performances. The goal? Staging of the changing cultures of the 21st century.

Complex plays of light and colour

This is the studio in Lisbon entangled responsible for furnishing the place with an installation created by its co-founder, the Norwegian Feileacan McCormick, an artist from the generative movement (movement that consists of creating works from algorithms) and its co-founder Sofia Crespo, a neural artist ( a discipline that feeds on the potential of artificial intelligence) and specialist in biologically inspired technologies.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Sediment Nicks’, is presented through a series of LED screens arranged along the garden’s pathways. According to the two artists “she examines the connections of what we assume to be inert or in motion in a marine environment traversed by complex plays of light and color whose origins are hidden from us“.

This journey is linked to a musical work by the experimental musician Clothilde. The composer will use unprogrammed modular machines to create unique ambient sounds. The soundtrack aims to unify the space and create a sonic journey accessible to all viewers.

Augmented Realities

On March 31st “Meta” will be played, the live performance of Ana Quiroga And Estela Oliva. The two London-based visual artists present “an immersive day into a future traversed by unknown worlds“. Conceived as a simulation game, this immersion is combined with a soundtrack created in real time. The show’s overall aesthetic is inspired by narrative forms borrowed from sci-fi and cyberpunk culture. The public is also invited to explore an environment depicting interconnected utopian and dystopian worlds.

The performance is presented in FPV (First-Person-View) and allows the audience to immerse themselves in the heart of the simulation, where the spectator embodies a traveler walking through the virtual space. During the performance, he speculatively immerses himself in a world composed of 5 scenes in which he navigates using tools and techniques from the world of video games.

SATURDAY, afro-futurist artist GLOR1A will use augmented reality for her participatory performance “I Choose Not To Die”, created in collaboration with Canadian artist Frances Adair. This musical live overlays an ancient digital world where nature encroaches and repopulates the foundations of the show.

Admission to Sónar+D Lisboa 2023 is free upon presentation of a ticket to the Sónar music program.
