America’s Hilary Knight picked up two points in her country’s aggregate win over Hungary and ousted Canada’s Hayley Wickenheiser as the all-time leading scorer at the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships in Denmark on Thursday.
The 33-year-old forward took her tally to 87 points in her 11th World Championship, one point more than the legendary Maple Leaf captain. It was a third-period goal, America’s eleventh in a 12-1 win, that put Knight in the history books.
The California native had equaled the record 86 points earlier in the meeting by being an accomplice of Hannah Bilka’s net. She had conceded another assist on Caroline Harvey’s goal, but it was eventually withdrawn after review.
The representatives of the United States never worried in this quarterfinal game. They bombarded the Hungarian cage with 69 shots and only allowed 10 shots. However, one of them, Alexandra Huszak’s, got the better of goalkeeper Nicole Hensley in the third period.
Taylor Heise shone with the Americans with a hat trick and an assist. Her teammate Amanda Kessel did even better with five assists. The United States hit the target nine times in the second half in particular.
Earlier in the day, Switzerland also reached the semifinals, needing penalties to defeat Japan 2-1.
