Electronic logging device
From April 30, Quebec will have to install the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) on heavy vehicles, which will allow recording of work and rest times.
Transport and Sustainable Mobility Minister Geneviève Guilbault believes that using this device will help reduce the risk of driver fatigue, which will help make Quebec’s roads safer.
The Electronic Logger is a device connected to the vehicle’s engine that automatically records all information about the driving and resting times of heavy-duty drivers. Its use has been mandatory in several provinces and territories of Canada since January 1st.
The obligation to install follows changes to the regulation on driving and rest times for drivers of heavy goods vehicles. The government notes that installing the ELD will help harmonize the competitive equity of North American transportation companies.
The ordinance stipulates that truck drivers must always keep logbooks for the last 14 days and that the logbooks in a company must be kept in the driver’s file for at least six months.
