Habs forward Mike Hoffman recently topped CapFriendly’s list of “popular buyouts.” That list isn’t scientific and it’s now Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray who takes the top spot, however Hoffman still has it and that has the benefit of starting discussion of a possible buyout for number 68 CH.
Certainly, Hoffman isn’t the only player on the Habs’ payroll whose pact purchase is under discussion. But he’s probably the only one whose contract has only one more season left, greatly reducing the fallout: Two-thirds of the $4.5 million he has to rake in in 2024-2024 would be spread over two seasons, making an impact of $1.67 million per season equates to yearly on the team’s payroll.
“It’s not just a question of money, it’s a question of culture,” said Éric Fichaud on Thursday at “la Poche bleue le midi”. For the culture, yes, I’ll buy it back. I don’t want him near me. It’s not like he’s the Canadian’s problem, but when you make a turn, the old guard that was there, it’s ‘go’.
“It’s the perspective that you want to create with your young people, to give them space,” he added. By removing him from the list, you can put someone in his place. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a youngster or you sign someone else who better suits your mentality.”
