Gymnastics World Championships | The Americans remain the queens and break a record

(Liverpool) Even without their superstar Simone Biles, they remain the gymnastics queens: The Americans became team world champions for the sixth time in a row in Liverpool on Tuesday, a record.

Led by their all-around Olympic gold medalist Jade Carey, they scored 166,564 points overall, three points ahead of British twins Jessica and Jennifer Gadirova (163,363 points). The Canadians, who were not so highly expected, completed the top 3 (160,563 points).

For qualifying on Saturday, the USA had placed two representatives in the top three places. In Tuesday’s final, they didn’t deviate from their standards by taking the lead on their first apparatus, the vault. Despite the screams of the British fans who came to nudge their team, the Americans didn’t let go of their heads afterwards.

They have now ruled the world stage for six consecutive editions, surpassing Romania, who were crowned five times between 1994 and 2001.

However, they had to do without a sacred good. For the first time in almost a decade, they were without Simone Biles, their 19-year-old world champion, who decided to take a break from competing after a grueling Olympics to look after her mental health.

But that didn’t stop Jade Carey, Shiles Jones, Jordan Chiles, Leanne Wong and Skye Blakely from dominating the competition. In Biles’ absence, the 21-year-old Chiles has taken on the role of leader.

“I just want to help the girls, be it mentally, physically, emotionally. I think I’m someone you can confide in when you need it,” she replied. “But I didn’t teach myself that. I’ve had a lot of help from people who are stronger than me, especially from Simone herself. She really taught me how to be a leader. ยป

With the podium place, the three leading teams also validate their ticket for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

“We didn’t come to have fun and enjoy the moment. It’s a recovery season for us and we’re really going to keep going until Paris-2024 because that’s going to be a big goal,” added Chiles.

At the foot of the podium, the Brazilians could rely on their Tokyo Olympic champion Rebeca Andrade, despite a fall on the beam. The one that had dominated the qualifiers of the general competition showed above all a masterful vault for her last round on vault, which was rewarded with 15.166 points.

“We’re very happy with the result because it’s the best result in our history as a team and I’m very proud of the group tonight,” said the 23-year-old Brazilian, a revelation from the last Olympics.

The competition resumes on Wednesday with the men’s all-around team competition. The Japanese, worn by two-time Olympic champion Daiki Hashimoto, are the favourites.
