Ontario’s new Housing Minister Paul Calandra says the province will not compensate real estate developers who own land that is intended to be reintegrated into the greenbelt.
The Minister explains that this provision will be included in a forthcoming draft law defining the boundaries of the green belt.
The Ford government removed land from the reserve last year so homes could be built there. Overall, it has set itself the goal of building 1.5 million apartments in 10 years.
This matter was criticized by the opposition and many opponents and led to the publication of two very critical reports by the Auditor General and the Integrity Commissioner, in which they said that they found the process inadequate and that the proponents had been favored.
Two ministers resigned, including Housing Minister Steve Clark.
U-turn by the Ford government
Premier Doug Ford apologized last week and announced the removed lands would be returned to the green belt.
The auditor estimated that the value of the confiscated land increased by $8.3 billion because of the zoning change.
The government is preparing to introduce a bill that will ensure future changes to the green belt are made through legislation rather than a change in regulations, as was the case last November.
