Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon embarked on a tour of Canada on Tuesday to raise awareness of mental health issues.
While in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, the head of state attended a workshop on well-being organized by Lifewise Mental Health Peer Services, an organization that provides training on peer support, according to a press release. She also attended an exchange meeting with health network staff “to highlight their work and show how their programs could inspire other initiatives across the country.”
On Wednesday, the Governor General will visit an opioid addiction treatment centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, where she is scheduled to stay until Friday as part of her first official visit to the province.
Further stops on the tour will be announced in due course, the Governor General’s Office said. The tour is expected to last for a year and will take place in various parts of the country. The press release states that MMe Simon wants to “meet people of all ages who have experience in the field of mental health, as well as alternative practitioners and recognised experts, to promote innovative practices in this field”.
The results of these visits and his reflections will be presented at a round table on mental health and well-being to be organized at Rideau Hall. Various speakers will be invited who will help to “form a national network of experts, partners and multidisciplinary practitioners, driven by a shared desire to promote mental health in Canada.” »
