One of the founding members of the Canadian rock group Steppenwolf, to whom we owe “Born to be Wild” and “Magic Carpet Ride”, has passed away.

Keyboardist John Goadsby, aka Goldy McJohn, died of a heart attack on Tuesday, as announced in a post on his Facebook page. He was 72 years old.

His funeral will take place next Friday in Seattle.

Steppenwolf made their debut in Toronto and had great success with their self-titled debut album in 1968.

The group applied for induction into this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but was ultimately not selected.

The group has seen many musicians over the years, but Temple counts Goldy McJohn, singer John Kay, drummer Jerry Edmonton and bassist Nick St. Nicholas – both Canadians – among its core members.
