OTTAWA – Global Affairs Canada reiterates its call for Canadians to avoid any travel to Israel, citing the unpredictable security situation due to ongoing regional conflicts.
The statement, issued on Saturday, said an escalation of the armed conflict in Israel could affect people’s ability to leave the country on commercial flights, adding that they should not rely on the Canadian government to help them evacuate.
The press release states that Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, as well as their spouses and dependent children, should ensure that their travel documents are up to date in case an evacuation is necessary.
Global Affairs Canada had already raised its warnings for Israel and the West Bank to the highest risk level on April 12.
Later that month, he lowered the level of that recommendation for Israel and recommended that Canadians “avoid all non-essential travel.”
Regional tensions have increased in recent days with the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in Lebanon.
Global Affairs Canada maintains its warning to avoid all travel to the West Bank and Gaza Strip due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
