“Girls and Science” back in Rimouski

While less than 25% of STEM (math, science, technology, engineering) positions will be held by women in 2024, the event “Girls and Science, an Electrifying DUO?!” » is back for a 23e Presentation in four cities, including Rimouski.

On this day, students aged 2 and over can studye3e and 4e The secondary school for the discovery of scientific and technical careers brings together more than 700 young girls and almost thirty schools and organizations every year.

To promote the choice of courses at the right time, the event will take place on Saturday, October 21, in Montreal (École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS)) and on Tuesday in Sherbrooke (Quantum Institute of the University of Sherbrooke). October 24th in Rimouski (Maritime Institute of Quebec) and Saturday November 4th in Quebec (Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Laval).

Workshops, shows and conferences

On the menu this 23rde Edition, workshops, great meetings with experts in the field and exciting shows and conferences.

In Quebec and Rimouski, biologist Vikie Pedneault, aka Biolovik, will hold a conference entitled “Whales are much more surprising than they seem!” “.

In this disjointed story, sometimes historical, often comical and 100% scientific, Vikie offers an immersion in the fascinating world of the sea. Note that the Rimousk edition is presented in collaboration with the Institut maritime du Québec as part of Quebec Maritime Day.

Discovery Zone

The central point of the event remains the “Discovery Zone”, which is similar to a career fair. Several organizations come together to offer interactive workshops and educational demonstrations.

In Montreal and Rimouski, Parité Science offers participants an association game that introduces five inspiring female scientists, including Farah Alibay, engineer, and Pauline Gagnon, physicist.

Short-circuiting inequalities

Despite efforts over the past two decades to encourage women to pursue an interest in science and technology, statistics show that gender disparities remain in these fields, both in terms of participation and representation.

in 2024, fewer than 25% of STEM (science, technology, technology, engineering) jobs were held by women, according to Statistics Canada. This statistic is astonishing when compared to the European Union, where women make up 43% of STEM workers.

According to the latest data from the Quebec Chair for Women in Science and Engineering (CFSG), the proportion of women in science and engineering in technical programs at CEGEP is around 20% and has barely increased between 2005 and 2021.

When it comes to A-levels, women are in the majority in almost all university areas, with the exception of pure and applied sciences (43% women in 2020-2021) and engineering (23% women in 2020-2021).

Reserved for girls

By organizing girls-only events, Girls and Science, an electrifying DUO, aims to help break down barriers.

“While everyone understands that diversity in teams is a great advantage, the statistics continue to show the importance of continuing our efforts to break stereotypes,” says Alexandra Masson, President of the Organizing Committee. It is important to emphasize that in this post-pandemic era, when businesses are in transition, the need for skilled workers is acute and career opportunities for the next generation of women in these industries are more attractive than ever. »
