“Gerard Gallant will not be returning to the NHL.”
That’s what our analyst Michel Bergeron said bluntly in his “No Net” column, which aired during the first break of Sunday night’s third game of the series between the Maple Leafs and the Panthers. See it in the video above.
“For Gerard it’s fi fi, ni ni! I think it’s over for him and he’s not coming back to the NHL. This is his fourth team. He made miles and money,” said Bergeron, who once coached the New York Rangers.
According to him, Gallant did not really leave the team voluntarily, as it became known on Saturday.
“It is said that the two parties have agreed to separate, but it is a constructive termination. It means: “Go home, the bill is in the trunk, but don’t speak against us”. Just like what happened to Paul Maurice with the Jets last year.
“Roy’s time has come”
Bergeron dreams of seeing Patrick Roy replace Gallant.
“Patrick’s time has come. Rangers GM is Chris Drury, who won the Stanley Cup with him. It would be wonderful for Patrick. Not only is he a former star goalkeeper, he has become a career coach. The fit is perfect. It’s only the “big ones” that go to New York! (laughs) It’s his place.
Gallant stayed at the top of the Blueshirts for just two seasons.
He helped the team advance to the Eastern Conference Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning last year.
A native of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Rangers signed in 2021 after winning a gold medal with the Canadian team at the Ice Hockey World Championships.
Gallant was the head coach of three other teams in the National Hockey League: the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Florida Panthers, and the Vegas Golden Knights.
He led the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Finals in their maiden NHL season in 2017-18.
