GDP in Canada: up 0.1% in February

Real gross domestic product (GDP) rose 0.1% in Canada in February.

In January, the Canadian economy grew more strongly by 0.6%.

Statistics Canada saw increases in services such as education, health care, social assistance, public administration, and professional, scientific and technical services in February.

The construction sector rose for the fifth straight month, up 0.3% in February.

In contrast, retail sales fell 0.5% in February, the first drop in three months. The 5.3% decline in forecourt activity contributed the most to the decline.

Advance information collected by Statistics Canada suggests that real GDP contracted by 0.1% in March and industrial real GDP grew by 0.6% in the first quarter of 2023.
