G7 countries condemn Pyongyang’s attempt to launch a satellite

The G7 countries on Thursday condemned North Korea’s attempt to launch a satellite using ballistic missile technology, according to a statement, calling it a “blatant violation” of several UN Security Council resolutions.

“Despite repeated calls from the international community,” North Korea has been accused of continuing its “escalation” with “a record number of ballistic missile launches.” This demonstrates, the statement said, “their determination to advance and diversify their illicit nuclear and ballistic capabilities.”

The press release, published in Brussels, the capital of the EU, is co-signed by the foreign ministers of the G7 (United States, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom), who join forces with the European head of diplomacy, Josep Borrell.

“North Korea can never and will never have nuclear-armed state status”

“We reiterate our demand that North Korea completely, verifiably and irreversibly abandon its nuclear weapons, existing nuclear programs and all other weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.”

They also call for Pyongyang to “fully comply with all obligations arising from relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.” “North Korea can never and will never have nuclear-armed state status under the NPT,” they continue.

North Korea announced on Thursday that its second attempt in three months to put a spy satellite into orbit had failed and vowed to try again in October. The American presidency immediately condemned this launch attempt and accused it of “intensifying tensions”.
