Fred VanVleet sets a record

Fred VanVleet was over the moon in Toronto Reports’ 128-108 win over the Charlotte Hornets Sunday afternoon at the Spectrum Center.

The 28-year-old American had 20 points and 20 assists. It was the first time in the Canadian organization’s history that one of its players had accomplished this feat.

VanVleet’s 20 assists also set a team record for most assists in a game. The old mark was 19 assists. Kyle Lowry, Damon Stoudamire and Jose Calderon all had that number of assists during their time with the Raptors.

Against the Hornets, it was Pascal Siakam who brought the charges. He had 36 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. OG Anunoby was not surpassed with his 23 points.

Quebec’s Chris Boucher had seven points and five rebounds in 16 minutes of play.

The win propelled the Raptors to a 39-39 record and relegated the Atlanta Hawks to eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings. However, Georgia’s formation will have an opportunity to once again overtake the NBA’s unique Canadian formation against the Dallas Mavericks tonight.

“That was really important for us [de prendre le huitième échelon], VanVleet said during press conferences after the game. It hasn’t been easy for us in the past few weeks. We’re in a state where we have to win all our games. So we all have to do our best. We’re trying to play our best basketball of the season.”

The Raptors return to action Tuesday against the same Hornets.
