François Legault is sanctioned by Russia

Moscow responds again to Canadian sanctions. Quebec’s prime minister is part of a list of 87 Canadians released by Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday who are now banned from entering Russian territory.

In a press release, the Russian government accuses the 87 victims, including Mr. Legault, of supporting the “neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv”. This new measure is aimed at “heads of provinces and territories, military officers and business leaders,” Moscow explains.

The prime ministers of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut are also affected by these latest sanctions, as are the lieutenant governors of every province and territory in the country.

High-ranking federal officials, military officers and business leaders, including many Quebecers, are also on this new “blacklist”.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website, a total of 905 Canadians are now subject to Russian sanctions, including “an entry ban to the Russian Federation.”

Also, last March The duty reported that the prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, as well as his foreign minister, Mélanie Joly, have been added to the list of Canadians sanctioned by Vladimir Poutine’s government, along with nearly 70 other Quebecers.

Response to Canadian Sanctions

Several Canadian sanctions against Russia and the Canadian government’s support measures for Ukraine are fueling Moscow’s anger. The Kremlin therefore explains in its press release, written in Russian, that it is acting in response to these “regular anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the Trudeau regime”.

Indeed, since the outbreak of war in Ukraine last February, Canada has sought to increase pressure on many sectors of the Russian economy, notably finance and energy. In addition, Canadian institutions are no longer allowed to do business with the Central Bank of Russia.

More than 900 individuals and 200 Russian companies are targeted by various Canadian sanctions.

Ottawa continues to supply arms to Ukraine. “Since February 2022, Canada has provided more than $500 million in emergency aid to Ukraine to help it fight and defeat the Russian invasion on its territory,” the ministry’s website reads.
