Four medals for Canadian skaters in Utah, including relay gold

In the 5000m relay, the Canadians (Pascal Dion, Steven Dubois, Maxime Laoun and Jordan Pierre-Gilles) dominated the final and easily won ahead of the South Koreans and the Chinese. It was the third gold medal this weekend for the Canadian team. Kim Boutin and Maxime Laoun were crowned in the first 500 meters in Salt Lake City on Saturday.

The Canadians (DanaƩ Blais, Kim Boutin, Courtney Sarault and Renee Marie Steenge) won the silver medal in the 3000 meters. Gold seemed within reach with four rounds to go, but the South Koreans pulled out a late pass to claim first place.

Canadians Rikki Doak and Courtney Sarault made it onto the podium in the individual events.

Doak won bronze in the second 500 meters for the first time at this World Championships. It was Xandra Velzeboer from the Netherlands who won ahead of Choi Minjeong from South Korea. DanaƩ Blais took 4th place.

Then, in the 1000m, Courtney Sarault warmed up Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands without overtaking her. The Canadian won the silver medal by a margin of 5 hundredths of a second at the Schulting finish line. Kim Boutin placed 3rd in the B finals.

In the men’s, Steven Dubois was 4th in the second 500m of the weekend while Pascal Dion fell in the 1000m final and was 5th.
