Members of the Liberal and Conservative backrooms will take the spotlight on Tuesday to testify before a parliamentary committee investigating allegations of foreign electoral interference.
The Procedures and House Affairs Committee will be heard by Jeremy Broadhurst, senior adviser to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who served as Liberal campaign manager in the 2019 general election.
Azam Ishmael, the Liberals’ national director and the person who oversaw the party’s campaign in the last election in 2021, is also expected to appear.
The Conservative Party’s 2021 national campaign manager, Fred DeLorey, is also expected to testify, as is Hamish Marshall, who held the same position in 2019.
The committee recently heard from Katie Telford, Trudeau’s longtime chief of staff, who repeatedly told MPs national security regulations prevented them from revealing details about briefings on the interference.
Concerns about Chinese interference in Canada’s affairs have intensified following a series of media reports citing unnamed sources that Beijing was trying to influence the outcome of the last election.
Many of these concerns relate to the 2021 federal election, when conservative candidates lost in multiple campaigns populated by many ethnic Chinese voters.
Former MP Kenny Chiu says he saw false information about him circulating on WeChat during the campaign.
