Football: Charmaine Crooks, first woman to lead the Canadian Confederation

Former track and field athlete Charmaine Brooks took over as President of Soccer Canada on Wednesday March 1st. She succeeds Nick Bontis, who has resigned as Canadian football grapples with a gender inequality crisis. Charmaine Crooks will become the first woman to be appointed to the position, the association said in a press release. Engaged in various sports organizations such as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) or FIFA, Charmaine Brooks also became the “first colored personto assume this function after two years as Vice President.

I understand the prompts to get it rightit,” proclaimed the first Canadian to compete in five Olympic Games. “The work ahead for our organization, our sport, and for the players who wear our Canadian jerseys is as important to me as any race I have competed in.said the 1984 Los Angeles Games silver medalist.

I know and understand the calls to get it right and I am confident that we will be able to make real change‘ she added, citing the conflict between the federation and the women’s and men’s teams. In early February, Canada players had waged a day-long strike to denounce gender inequality and a lack of funding, an approach supported by the men’s team.

It should be noted that other national football associations have placed women at their helm in recent years. These include Cindy Parlow, who runs the American FA, Debbie Hewitt, who runs the English FA, or even Lise Klaveness in Norway.
