Fires in Canada: are the fumes arriving in France dangerous?

Several European countries, including France, are expected to be affected this Monday, June 26 by the fumes caused by the gigantic wildfires in Canada in early June. What are the health risks of spreading them in the air?

Canadian smoke soon to be worst in Paris? Since the beginning of June, Canada’s forests have been ravaged by gigantic fires that have already burned millions of hectares.

The smoke generated by these mega wildfires first spread to New York but has now crossed the Atlantic and could reach parts of France, including Paris, this Monday, June 26.

For its part, Canadian weather broadcaster Météo Média had announced that “these plumes of smoke will darken skies in Ireland and England on Sunday and Monday”.

For reassurance, she said “the smoke will be mostly found at altitude,” but noted some “could descend closer to the ground, affecting air quality.”

For example, fumes released in certain sectors of Canada and the United States have caused a significant deterioration in air quality in both countries. And with good reason: the fine particles contained in the smoke are hazardous to health.

Also, the spread of these fumes, releasing large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, would inevitably have adverse consequences for the planet. This rejection leads to a deprivation of natural carbon sinks.
