Figure skaters denounce abuse in an open letter

This group is for coaches from the BC Center of Excellence, a club now known as the Champs International Skating Centre.

The alleged behaviors, including physical, verbal and emotional abuse, are said to have taken place within the past 15 years.

Under the guise of anonymity, skaters have chosen to disclose the treatment that would have been reserved for them at this club.

They report suffering from psychological harassment, slander and isolation. The letter also alludes to scuffles on the ice, slander and bribery.

Skaters would have been locked in the locker room as punishment and had to train in poor conditions.

It said most of these incidents went unreported due to deficiencies in the whistleblowing facilitation system and fears of reprisals from those who influenced the careers of their alleged victims.

Figure Skating for Change Canada also expresses skaters’ lack of trust in Skate Canada leaders in this open letter have not dealt with complaints appropriately in the past and the Office of the Sports Integrity Commissioner, who, according to this whistleblower group cannot independently guarantee their protection.

Without this assurance of justice, the athletes feel will continue to struggle with anxiety and depression and that their suspected abusers will be able to escape.

In a statement published on its website, Skate Canada said deeply troubled through these claims and claims had no contact with the group behind this open letternor received any complaint or communication regarding any of the points set out in this letter.

Skate Canada escalated the allegations to its SafeSkating Whistleblower Line, a misconduct reporting system that allows for independent review, investigation and determination, and determines whether the matter should be escalated to the Abuse Free Sports Organization and the Office of the Sports Integrity Commissioner.

Figure Skating for Change Canada says it is acting with a sense of urgency after reporting many allegations of abuse from Canadian athletes who, over the past year, have boldly and loudly called for a national judicial inquiry aimed at restoring a healthy sporting environment in the country to accomplish.
