Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime had a bad day at work and saw his career end in the round of 16 at the tournament in Miami on Monday.
The sixth seedling for this Florida event lost the flag in straight sets 6-2 7-5 to Argentine Francisco Cerundolo. The 25th seed in Miami won in an hour and 43 minutes.
“FAA” struggled when he served, he who hit only 54% of his first tries and made five double faults. The Montreal native won just 29% of the rallies that started on his second serve.
Auger-Aliassime saved two of the six break points offered by his rival. It was also the first time in three confrontations that Cerundolo defeated the Maple Leaf’s representative. “FAA” had enjoyed victory over him at the Australian Open and Indian Wells earlier this year.
Cerundolo meets the winner of the duel between the American Frances Tiafoe and the Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the round of 16.
Fernandez advances in doubles
Also in Miami, Quebec’s Leylah Annie Fernandez advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s doubles component of the competition.
Together with her partner, the American Taylor Townsend, she beat the Mexican Giuliana Olmos and the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets 6:4, 7:6(4).
Fernandez’s team put pressure on their opponents, especially when they were in possession. The North Americans offered 15 break points and converted five.
On Tuesday Fernandez and Townsend meet Ukraine’s Lyudmyla Kichenok and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko. They are third in women’s doubles.
