Quebec’s Félix Auger-Aliassime lost in the first round of the Adelaide tournament on Monday.
Auger-Aliassime, second in the competition behind Novak Djokovic of Serbia, lost in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (5) to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin, who came out of qualifiers.
The meeting lasted 1h54.
With seven aces, two double faults and a 68% efficiency rate on first serve, “FAA” didn’t fare badly in his faceoffs, but was broken twice by his rival.
In the next round, Popyrin meets American Marcos Giron.
In the same tournament, Canadians Vasek Pospisil and Novak Djokovic were defeated by Bosnian Tomislav Brkic and Ecuadorian Gonzalo Escobar 4:6, 6:3, 10:5 in doubles.

In Auckland, New Zealand, third-placed Leylah Fernandez of Quebec made short work of Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova 6-1, 6-1, while eighth-placed Canadian Rebecca Marino defeated Italy’s Dalma Galfi 6-3, 7-6 ( 3).
Those were two first-round games.
Marino meets Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure in the next round, Fernandez meets Austrian Julia Grabher.
