Canada’s Supreme Court refuses to hear Facebook’s challenge to a class action lawsuit against Facebook in Quebec.
The social network thus loses any possibility of preventing the lawsuit from being carried out.
A Quebec woman, Lyse Beaulieu, took this action because she believes old Facebook policies have discriminated against her age.
Between the ages of 63 and 65, she used the social network to look for a job. She says she couldn’t see job postings that interested her because Facebook policies allowed advertisers to target certain age groups at the expense of others.
Facebook has since changed its policies, but Ms. Beaulieu has taken steps to launch a class action lawsuit against all Quebec-based Facebook users who have been “specifically banned from Facebook’s advertising services” since April 11, 2016 because of their race and gender. . , marital status, age, origin or social situation.
The Supreme Court rejected such a class action, but the decision was overturned by the Court of Appeal. Facebook therefore turned to the country’s highest court, which announced on Thursday that it would not examine the case.
