As a Pacific nation, Canada is committed to expanding its partnerships and strengthening its ties in the Indo-Pacific region, which plays a vital role in our country’s economic growth, prosperity and security. The region is a point where important supply chains converge, making it a vital hub for trade, investment and manufacturing. We will continue to work with our partners in the Indo-Pacific region to advance shared priorities and deepen our engagement under Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy (ICS), which is forthcoming. As announced by Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly on November 9, 2022, the SCI will be structured around the following objectives:
- strengthening Canada’s role as a reliable and committed partner in the Indo-Pacific region;
- ensure resilience, peace and security;
- increasing the resilience of trade, investment and supply chains;
- Invest in people and bring them together;
- Building a sustainable and green future.
Modern Trade Mission Team Canada 3.0 (ICS)
financing : $45 million over five years
The Canadian government, in cooperation with partner ministries, provinces and territories and other stakeholders, will launch a series of enhanced ministerial-led trade missions to the Indo-Pacific region, focusing on priority markets and innovative sectors. This trade mission model will position Canadian exporters and innovators for success in the Indo-Pacific markets as they demonstrate their skills and competitiveness and will facilitate the creation of long-term trade and development opportunities. This initiative will also support Canadian regional chambers of commerce by increasing their capacity and effectiveness, particularly as partners in the success of trade representation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Indo-Pacific Agriculture and Food Administration of Canada (IPAAO) (SCI)
financing : $31.8 million over five years
By establishing our first agriculture office in the region, this initiative will increase and diversify Canadian agri-food exports to the Indo-Pacific region. This new office will position Canada as the region’s preferred supplier of agri-food products, which will boost trade on both sides of the Pacific. Working with various stakeholders, regulators and policymakers will strengthen partnerships in the region to diversify products and export markets, create new opportunities and position Canada as the reliable and dependable trading partner of choice in the Indo-Pacific region.
Increasing the resources of Canadian missions in the Indo-Pacific Region (ICS)
Financing: $92.5 million over five years
This initiative will allow the creation of nearly 60 new positions, significantly expanding the capacity of Canada’s offices abroad and within Global Affairs Canada. Its purpose is to advance and defend Canadian interests in the Indo-Pacific region. This initiative will help strengthen diplomatic, security, trade, development and climate ties with our regional partners while ensuring Canada has the resources to seize new opportunities and expand rapidly and efficiently in the region react.
Multiply connections to natural resources with the Indo-Pacific region (SCI)
Financing: $13.5 million over five years
This initiative will build Canadian capacity to expand natural resource links – in trade, investment and science, technology and innovation – with priority partners in the Indo-Pacific region, including Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore and Taiwan. With new specialists on the ground and expanded capabilities in Canada, this initiative will strengthen collaboration between Canada and its partners in the region. In addition, Canada can share and acquire trade-related knowledge in the field of natural resources and clean technologies. Finally, the initiative will encourage the expansion and diversification of trade and investment in Canadian natural resources.
