In any case, there are world days for all subjects. While some themes may seem crazy, others definitely have a reason to be. So also today on this World Contraceptive Day.

One might think that it is easily accessible, but that is not yet the case even for us. A survey of 1,500 women ages 18 to 40, commissioned by Organon Canada in March 2022, found that 48% of pregnancies in Canada are unplanned. The study also highlighted the fact that very few women and young women are aware of the resources available to them.

“Women with unplanned pregnancies are at high risk of experiencing impacts on many health factors that can have significant adverse effects. It is critical that women in Canada have access to a variety of birth control methods and resources so they can make smart, informed choices.”said dr Diane Francoeur, Executive Director, Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC).

According to SOGC, decision makers, teachers, large companies and even healthcare professionals must do everything possible to counteract this situation and believe that several solutions can be implemented.

One of the solutions proposed by SOGC is access to the abortion pill. Also known as the morning-after pill, the abortion pill will not be widely available in Canada in 2022. Additionally, it is rarely offered in Quebec and is difficult to obtain without a prescription.

To better guide the population, the Direction de la santé publique de la Montérégie published a short explanatory video capsule on emergency oral contraception on Monday.

It is intended for a youthful clientele and can also answer questions from young adults and adults. How it works? When to use? where to get it

This capsule is the result of a collaboration between the health departments of the CISSS des Laurentides, Lanaudière and Montérégie-Centre.

World Contraceptive Day, September 26th, is the perfect occasion to recognize that millions of women and girls need knowledge, access to contraception and trust in men.
