The director of the training centre, Patrick Lefebvre, deplores this situation, which he believes risks weakening the range of services and retaining qualified teachers in his establishment.
It’s been two or three years since we’ve felt a drop in registrations
says Mr Lefebvre.
” But what is special this fall and hasn’t happened for a long time is that we couldn’t start a nursing class due to a lack of students and we expected about fifteen students […]so we had to postpone our training. »
The Health, Aid and Nursing program was due to start in August, but Mr Lefebvre was forced to postpone the training until October. In view of the continuing lack of registrations, the director explains that he even has to postpone the start of training in January.
It hurts us and it affects us because the need is screaming and the ZISS de la Gaspésie works with us because they have enormous needs
says Patrick Lefebvre.
” According to discussions with the directors of other training centers in remote regions of Quebec, this is a reality affecting many people in programs that were normally in full swing a few years ago. »
The training, usually provided in training centres, is often in areas where there is a serious shortage of labour.
Let’s take the example of nursing, welding assembly, electromechanical, cooking; These are all programs that are in high demand [de main-d’œuvre]
explains Mr Lefebvre.
In recruitment mode
To compensate for the lack of registrations, the La Côte-de-Gaspé training center is developing several recruitment strategies.
In recent years we have understood that local recruitment is not enough, continues Patrick Lefebvre. We have incentives to bring people in, we give free access to a dormitory.
The training center also participates in training and job fairs and recruits internationally.
We’re trying to fill the workforce, but the needs of the businesses remain and we need to keep those people too, and that’s another challenge.
he adds.
According to Mr Lefebvre, joint work between training centers and companies and the participation of the latter must be carried out in order to rebalance the registrations.
” Despite the labor shortage, there must be a demand for minimum skills to hire someone and we must do business with ourselves to meet that demand. »
According to Patrick Lefebvre, company training and partnerships with a training center could also be an advantageous solution for companies and training institutions.
