Dramatic turn of events: Barely a month after agreeing on the terms of a three-year contract, the Montreal Canadiens and the head coach of his school club, Jean-François Houle, are getting a divorce.
The CH lets Houle go so he can become head coach of Clarkson University in the NCAA.

“We would like to thank Jean-François for his contribution to developing the culture of our organization and our players. During his three years at the helm of the Rocket, his commitment and experience ensured that the team was very competitive while adequately preparing many players for the jump to the NHL. We wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his career,” Rocket General Manager John Sedgwick is quoted as saying in the press release published by the Canadian.
The organization must therefore begin the search for a new head coach for the Rockets. It also remains to be seen whether Houle will bring one or more assistants with him to the NCAA.
On May 29, the Canadian awarded a three-year contract to Houle, who led the Rocket to the playoffs twice during his three seasons on the bench. Most notably, he led his team to the semifinals of the American Hockey League in 2022.
The main interested party responded quickly on the Clarkson Golden Knights website.
“I am extremely grateful to be able to return to coaching at my alma mater. I am excited about the future of hockey at Clarkson and look forward to continuing the program’s rich history. […] My family and I have made great friends within the community and we are excited to return to Potsdam,” said Houle.
According to the press release, the Quebec native and his wife Mia returned to Potsdam, New York, last year. Their son Noah attends SUNY Potsdam College, where he is a member of the lacrosse team.
