The Columbus Blue Jackets have only just revealed their plan as the draft draws near.
In an interview on 97.1 The Fan in Ohio, the president of the team’s hockey operations, John Davidson, said a third-place centerer would be selected.
“We will design a center. Which center? It’s not set in stone yet. We just completed meetings with our amateur scouts in Columbus.”
If we assume that Connor Bedard and Adam Fantilli will start in the first and second rows, the “Jackets” should have their sights set on American Will Smith or Swede Leo Carlsson.
“The Ice Hockey World Championship is happening in Europe right now and Carlsson will be there for Sweden,” Davidson continued. We have an idea of where we’re going, but I can’t release that information to the public. We will sign an excellent player. There are some very good ones in this design.
“We know that since Pierre-Luc Dubois left, we have an urgent need at the centre. We’ll address that in the draft. We have no choice. It will be done.”
After the Blue Jackets, the San Jose Sharks will rule. Unless they have Matvei Michkov in their sights, the Canadians are unlikely to stand a chance of signing Smith or Carlsson.
