The union, which represents some 3,000 Bombardier workers at its Dorval business jet manufacturing facility, is threatening a strike if it fails to strike a new agreement in principle with the Quebec aircraft maker.
The two sides will continue negotiations on Monday, but Unifor warns its members could decide to go on strike “from midnight tonight”. In Sunday’s meeting, the workers had rejected the basic agreement presented to them by around 60%.
The content of the agreement was not disclosed.
“Despite the results, Bombardier is back at the table to continue good faith negotiations with Local Union 62 (of Unifor) to find solutions to finalize an agreement,” the company said in a statement.
In Dorval, the employees at the finishing center are busy, among other things, fitting out the interiors of Bombardier’s luxury private jets. This is where the customization of the Global 7500 – the company’s flagship – takes place.
A labor dispute could affect Bombardier’s ability to deliver. As of September 30, the business jet manufacturer has delivered 74 aircraft to customers. The company anticipates a target of at least 120 deliveries in 2022. The year-end promises to be busy as at least 46 devices need to be completed.
Last spring, after tough negotiations, Bombardier found common ground with its 1,800 employees, who are responsible in particular for assembling the Challenger and who are represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW).
