Forward Alex Newhook and defensemen David Reinbacher and Logan Mailloux will be in the lineup when the Canadiens play their first preseason game against the New Jersey Devils (7 p.m., RDS, TSN 690 Radio, 98.5 FM).
Newhook was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche the day before June’s NHL Draft in Nashville in exchange for a first-round pick (31st overall) and a second-round pick (37th overall). The Canadiens selected Reinbacher in the first round of this year’s draft (fifth overall) and took Mailloux in the first round (31st overall) of the 2021 draft.
Newhook will line up in the No. 1 midfield on Monday night between Juraj Slafkovsky and Josh Anderson – as he has since the start of training camp – while Reinbacher will be with Kaiden Guhle on the first defensive pairing and Mailloux will play with Jordan Harris on the third pairing.

“They were excellent,” head coach Martin St. Louis said after Monday morning’s skate at the CN Sports Complex in Brossard when asked about Reinbacher and Mailloux. “You see the potential and now they can experience their first game. It is exciting. You should be (excited). They are two big boys with similar characteristics but different players. I look forward to seeing them.”
Samuel Montembeault will start in goal for the Canadiens and share duties with Jakub Dobes, who was selected in the fifth round (136th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft.

“I’m excited,” Reinbacher said of his first game at the Bell Center after skating Monday morning. “It will be special. It is a great honor for me to be able to play tonight. I hope there are some good players on the other side – I hope there are some Swiss players. Let’s see.”
Reinbacher played in the Swiss-A League last season and posted a combined record of 3-19-22 in 46 games for Kloten HC. The 18-year-old is expected to return to Kloten HC this season.
Reinbacher said he had a nice dinner with his father on Sunday night in Montreal and wasn’t nervous about playing his first game in a Canadiens sweater.

Newhook, who played the last three seasons with the Avalanche, is also looking forward to his Canadiens debut at the Bell Centre.
“I’ve been looking forward to this evening for a while,” Newhook said. “It’s only the preseason, but putting on this sweater means a lot to the history of this program. After all the build up after the trade, it will be great to finally put it on.”

Of his linemates, Newhook said, “I think it’s a great line. So far in the scrimmages here I’ve had a bit of fun playing with them. I think both guys bring a lot to the table. Both guys are big and can skate, play hard, and I think that complements my game too.
“I think we can be a really fast line, a line that can generate offense and also shut down other teams,” Newhook added. “It’s exciting and I’m looking forward to getting into the action with them.”
The Canadiens will play their second of six preseason games on Wednesday when they host the Ottawa Senators at the Bell Center (7 p.m., TSN5, RDS, TSN 690 Radio, 98.5 FM).
