Amid a scandal for throwing a wheelchair down the stairs, the son of former Philadelphia Flyers player and current interim general manager Daniel Brière was kicked off his varsity hockey team.
“Carson Briere was removed from the Mercyhurst University men’s ice hockey team. Mercyhurst cannot comment further on this,” the institution said in a statement posted to the Mercyhurst Lakers Twitter account.
In March, a video surfaced on social media showing Carson Brière throwing a wheelchair down a flight of stairs in a bar. The chair in question belonged to a disabled person who needed the help of friends to get to the bathroom in the basement.
The son of the man who wore the Montreal Canadiens colors in 2013-2014 and a friend of his are facing criminal mischief and disorderly conduct charges in this case. Specifically, the charges include “damaging property and criminal conspiracy to commit mischief.” Both men will appear in court in Erie, Pennsylvania on May 22 for their preliminary investigations.
Mercyhurst University previously suspended Carson Brière. In 2022-2023, his third season with the Lakers, the 23-year-old forward recorded five goals and eight assists for 13 points in 30 games.
“I am deeply sorry for my behavior. There is no excuse for my actions and I will do everything I can to remedy this serious lack of judgment,” Carson Brière said in a press release issued March 15.
“I was shocked when I saw Carson’s actions in this video shared on social media. They are inexcusable and totally go against our family values of respecting people. Carson is sorry and takes full responsibility for his behavior,” his father said.
