CMHC: The pace of housing starts slowed in August

OTTAWA — The annual pace of housing starts slowed in August from July, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said on Friday.

Monthly, seasonally adjusted, annualized housing starts came in at 267,443 units in August, down 3% from the previous month’s 275,158 units, the federal housing authority said.

The annual trend in housing starts in metropolitan areas fell by 3% to 246,771 units in August, and that of apartment buildings by 4% to 187,602 units.

Single-family housing starts in urban centers totaled 59,169 units, up 1%.

Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted and annualized rural housing starts were estimated at 20,672 units.

The six-month moving average of seasonally adjusted and annualized monthly housing starts was 267,309 units in August, up from 264,467 units in July, CMHC said.
