(Ottawa) Canada will contribute US$450 million to the Green Climate Fund, which aims to help developing countries fight climate change.
Environment Secretary Steven Guilbeault made the announcement on Wednesday while attending a ministerial meeting on climate change in Brussels later this week.
The announced contribution to the Green Climate Fund is part of the $5.3 billion over five years that Ottawa has pledged in 2021 in international funding to fight climate change.
The government noted that the $450 million represents a 50 percent increase on what Ottawa invested in the Green Climate Fund in 2019.
Canada estimates that the financial framework will fund projects and programs that will reduce “a total of 2.5 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in carbon dioxide equivalents.” According to Ottawa, “278 million direct beneficiaries and 635 million indirect beneficiaries” will be affected.
Around 30 ministers and other representatives will meet at the ministerial meeting on climate protection on Thursday and Friday. They need to discuss their priorities ahead of the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference.
