The Canadiens struggled again on the power play on Tuesday night and that played a big part in the 3-1 loss to the Wild at the Bell Centre.
Since the start of the season, the team has scored just one goal in 21 power play opportunities. For many, the lack of a good attacking defender in the formation is questionable.
At the moment, the role of “quarterback” is taken by default by Chris Wideman, who will not be confused with Bobby Orr. Also, Wideman didn’t have a great game on Tuesday, which earned him some criticism in the “aftergame.”
“Wideman should be your number six or seven, he finds himself as a quarterback on the first wave on the power play and I really miss that,” noted former CH defender Alexandre Picard.
Former Senators goalie Mathieu Chouinard was more perceptive.
“Wideman can’t distribute the puck very well, he doesn’t have a brilliant shot on the power play, he doesn’t pass the puck (into the opponent’s zone) and he also costs a penalty,” complained at-er.
“Wideman, what is he doing with the Montreal Canadiens? To fill a sweater?” then asked the analyst.
