Chester County turns to Waga Energy
for the production of biomethane in Pennsylvania (USA)
Waga Energy (EPA: WAGA), a specialist in the production of biomethane at landfills, has signed an agreement with the Chester County Solid Waste Authority (CCSWA), the authority responsible for waste management in Chester County (Pennsylvania, USA), to produce biomethane at the Lanchester Landfill and Reclamation Center in the town of Narvon. The contract was signed on October 4 after Waga Energy won a tender.
As part of this project, Waga Energy will build a purification plant using its patented WAGABOX® technology, which will make it possible to produce biomethane, a renewable replacement for fossil natural gas, from biogas released when the organic matter contained in waste is broken down. The biomethane is fed directly into the local gas network. Waga Energy will operate this facility for at least 20 years and share revenue from the sale of the biomethane with Chester County.
The WAGABOX® system can treat up to 3,200 m3/h of raw gas and produce around 130 GWh of biomethane per year. During its production, the emission of 21 is avoided 500 Tons of CO eq2 by replacing fossil natural gas[1].
The Lancaster storage site receives around 280,000 tonnes of waste annually. The gas emitted from the waste is captured to avoid direct methane emissions into the atmosphere. The installation of a WAGABOX® unit will allow this gas to be used to supply the area with local and renewable energy, leveraging the existing gas infrastructure.
This is the sixth project Waga Energy is undertaking in the United States. One WAGABOX® unit has been in use in Canada since May last year, and seventeen more are in use in Europe.
Robert Watts, executive director of the Chester County Solid Waste Authoritysaid: “ We are excited about the prospect of working with Waga Energy to convert gas from the Lanchester Waste Storage and Recovery Center into biomethane, which will be fed directly into the local gas network “.
Guénaël Prince, President and CEO of Waga Energy Inc. (USA)said: “ We are honored to have been selected by the Chester County Solid Waste Authority to undertake this project, which will benefit the local community both environmentally and economically. By choosing the reference technology, Lanchester Waste Storage and Recovery Center will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while generating additional revenue.. »
About Waga Energy
Waga Energy (EPA: WAGA) produces biomethane at competitive prices by recovering gas from landfills (“ Landfill gas”) thanks to a patented purification technology called WAGABOX®. The biomethane produced is fed directly into the gas distribution networks that supply private individuals and businesses, thus replacing fossil natural gas. Waga Energy finances, builds and operates its WAGABOX® units under long-term contracts with storage operators for the delivery of raw gas and generates revenue through the resale of the biomethane or the provision of a cleaning service. As of the date of this press release, Waga Energy operates eighteen WAGABOX® units in France, Spain and Canada, representing an installed capacity of 665 GWh/year. Sixteen units are under construction in France, Canada and the United States. Every project implemented by Waga Energy contributes to the fight against global warming and the energy transition. Waga Energy is listed on Euronext Paris.
About the Chester County Solid Waste Authority
The Chester County Commissioners established the Chester County Solid Waste Authority (CCSWA) in August 1984. In September 1984, CCSWA became the owner and operator of the Lanchester Landfill and Reclamation Center 240 hectares in the townships of Honey Brook, Salisbury and Caernarvon, including 65 hectares for waste storage. CCSWA’s mission is to dispose of all discarded materials in the LLARC watershed with minimal impact on the environment and with the overall long-term goal of zero waste.
