Though the 2022-2023 season is a tough one, Montreal Canadiens fans can feed off small celebrations.
Some players were able to use the final quarter of the campaign to improve their stats and even set personal bests.
Nick Suzuki
Offensively, Nick Suzuki is heading for the best season of his young career. If he maintains his cruising speed, the captain scores 64 points, three more than his personal mark from the previous year. The Ontarian’s next goal, his 22nd of the year, will also be a record.
Christian Dworak
Aside from Suzuki, Dvorak is the only other CH player to have featured in the team’s 63 games so far. The former Arizona Coyotes is fourth in the standings with 28 points, ten points off his personal best. The American will have to work twice as hard in the last 19 duels.
Mike Matheson
If he hadn’t been limited to just 29 games in 2022-23 due to a serious injury, Matheson would likely have been through his best seasons by now. His excellent pace earned him 41 points in 63 games. Last year he set a career high with 31 points with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Can the Quebec defender still do it at 19?
Michael Pezzetta
The dynamic Pezzetta put on a similar performance to last year, having capitalized on injuries to earn a spot in head coach Martin St-Louis’ squad. With 10 points in 44 games, he is just one point below last year’s mark. In terms of penalty minutes (48 to 81), the left winger still has a long way to go.
Samuel Montembault
At net, Montembeault has been a very nice surprise for the Canadian this season. The Bécancourer native is 12-13-2 with a save rate of .905, two personal bests. He was between the posts 38 times in 2021-2022. With 27 games played so far, he could be approaching that mark.
Records with CH
Even some veterans could have their best season in the blue, white and red uniform. Josh Anderson (18 goals and 26 points) is on track to surpass his previous season record (19 goals and 32 points) and could hit 20 goals for the second time in the National League.
Best known for his defensive talent, David Savard is one point away from a personal mark with the Canadian. The 32-year-old full-back has 16 points to his credit this season.
After all, Jake Allen has already racked up more wins (14) than in his first two campaigns in Montreal (11 and 9). After missing fewer games through injuries, the New Brunswicker has 36 games under his belt.
Despite their continued absences, Cole Caufield and Kirby Dach both set personal bests in multiple categories. There will only be one shift for the two attackers in the coming season.
Habs Rookies, Kaiden Guhle (15 pts), Jordan Harris (15 pts), Arber Xhekaj (13 pts), Rafaël Harvey-Pinard (12 pts), Juraj Slafkovsky (10 pts), Johnathan Kovacevic (10 pts), Justin Barron ( 9 points) and Jesse Ylonen (9 points) also had no trouble beating their previous crops, as did Alex Belzile (7 points).
