The Stampeders’ elimination in the Western semifinals likely ended quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell’s era in Calgary.
On Monday, during Team Alberta’s debriefing, it seemed more than obvious that this would be the 32-year-old’s last game in the uniform he has worn for the past 10 years.
For the playoff game against the BC Lions, it was Jake Maier who stole the starting spot from the veteran in August. Dominating, the Stampeders decided to send Mitchell into contention in the fourth quarter. The latter failed to turn the tide and his team lost 30-16.
“The message is pretty clear when another player is playing and I want to be a starter,” said Mitchell, whose comments were reported daily by the Calgary Herald.
The Texas native will become a free agent in the coming weeks. He joined the Stampeders in 2012 and led the club to two Gray Cup titles. He holds the Canadian league record for most consecutive wins (14) and is the fastest quarterback with 60 wins (72 games).
A future coach
Mitchell doesn’t seem ready to ditch his shoulder pads just yet, but already has an idea of what he wants to do when he gets there and it could go through the Stampeders again.
In fact, he opened the door to joining Dave Dickenson’s coaching group.
“For the last two years, I’ve been telling Dave that he’ll be the first person to get a call from me anytime,” Mitchell said. I would love to work for him and with him because he’s a guy I’m still learning from and will always teach me.”
“Even though I’ve been here for 10 years, I still haven’t internalized all this knowledge. His brain is much bigger than his head.
When Mitchell calls, Dickenson intends to answer.
“At some point I would like to work with him, whether next year or later,” said the head coach. I don’t think he should enter the coaching world now because I think Bo still wants to play.”
