CBC and Radio-Canada resume posting on Twitter

(New York) The public media group founded by CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and Radio-Canada on Tuesday announced the resumption of its activities on Twitter, a little less than a month after its suspension, citing the need for sources for ” credible information” on the platform.

The Canadian audiovisual giant initially took a step back after Twitter gave it the label of “state-funded media” in mid-April, a designation the group believed called into question its independence.

A week later, after an outcry from several organizations, including American radio station NPR and the BBC in the UK, the social network had dropped the label, along with that of “pro-government media”.

At the same time, the platform removed blue badges from accounts that refused to pay to keep them.

Prior to Elon Musk’s October acquisition, these blue marks were only awarded after verifying the authenticity and credibility of the account holder. They are now accessible to everyone and must be paid for.

“Despite this, and even if the management of the network remains unpredictable, we believe it is important to resume publications on certain large accounts, as it is fundamental that citizens can continue to find credible sources of information,” reads a published Message on behalf of Radio-Canada, Luce Julien, Director General of Information.

“Twitter generates very little direct traffic in the Canadian radio ecosystem. However, it remains a platform for information to circulate,” the official continued. “As a public media, we owe it to ourselves to be active there and to continue to disseminate reliable information. »

Some media outlets, including NPR or Swedish public radio Sveriges Radio (SR), have not resumed activity on the platform.
