Canadian police are investigating China’s interference in elections

Allegations of foreign interference are being taken “very seriously” by the Canadian government, said Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino.

Canadian police are investigating alleged foreign interference by China, including in its “democratic processes,” according to a letter from the police chief, which does not detail the allegations.

Written by federal police chief Brenda Lucki, the letter is addressed to a parliamentary committee investigating possible foreign interference, including Chinese, in Canada’s 2019 federal election.

About that election won by Justin Trudeau, Brenda Lucki says there was “no evidence” of interference at the time.

A “secret network”

“The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Federal Police) can confirm that they are currently conducting investigations into interference activities by foreign actors,” the letter said.

Global News reported this month that an “underground network” of Canadian federal election candidates and Chinese agents working on their campaign was funded by China.

Following the release of the document, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada’s “intelligence agencies have repeatedly stressed that interference by foreign powers in Canadian affairs is an enduring matter.”

“Canadians can rest assured that the integrity of our elections has not been compromised,” the police chief said.

China recently denied reports that President Xi Jinping and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau discussed Chinese meddling in Canada after media reports of a tense exchange between the two leaders at the G20 summit.
