LONGUEUIL, Que. – A piece of Canadian radar technology will play a key role in a satellite mission due to be launched on Friday, aiming to study almost all of Earth’s surface water.
The SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) mission is led by NASA and CNES, the French space agency, with contributions from Canada and the United Kingdom.
The mission will survey 90% of the Earth’s water surface and collect data to better understand and address the impacts of climate change and improve water stewardship.
A Canadian-made component of NASA’s radar will generate the pulses used to gather precise surface information. Canadian scientists are part of the SWOT science team.
Researchers said today at a briefing at the Canadian Space Agency that the SWOT mission will revolutionize how ocean currents are observed from space.
The satellite is scheduled to launch early Friday morning aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Base in California after today’s scheduled launch was canceled by NASA.
