Canadian Katherine Sebov has qualified for the Miami Open

Canada’s Katherine Sebov qualified for the main draw of the Miami Open with a three-set win over Jodie Burrage in the second round of tournament qualifiers on Monday.


Sebov beat his opponent 6-7(2), 7-5, and 6-3. She had won her opening game 6-4, 6-3 against Kamilla Rakhimova, who was sixth seeded in qualifying.

This is Sebov’s first tournament in WTA 1000 caliber outside his home country. Earlier this year, the 24-year-old Canadian qualified for her first major tournament of her career at the Australian Open.

Currently ranked 172e World Ranking, his all-time highest ranking, Sebov also recently won a US$25,000 ITF tournament.

Sebov will therefore bring the total number of Canadian women competing at the Miami Open to four in women’s singles, with Bianca Andreescu, Leylah Annie Fernandez and Rebecca Marino.

Sebov will take charge again on Tuesday when she meets Czech Linda Fruhvirtova. Marino will also play her first round match against Kazakh Yulia Putintseva on Tuesday.

In the first round, expected Wednesday, Fernandez, 53e World Player, meets Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, a player from the qualifiers.

For his part, Andreescu should start his tournament on Wednesday by taking on Emma Raducanu, 72e World Racket and winner of the United States Open in 2021. Andreescu is ranked 31ste Rank.

For men, Canadians FĂ©lix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov are also in Miami to take part in the tournament.

Fifth and 24the set, the two Canadians benefit from byes that lead straight into the second round.
