The US Secretary of State thanked Canada for its leadership and close coordination in imposing sanctions on certain Haitian figures and providing assistance to Haiti at a time when it is gripped by a deep crisis at all levels.
United States, January 7, 2023.- Antony J. Blinken and Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly held a telephone conversation in which continued support for Haiti was one of the topics discussed.
Blinken expressed his appreciation for Canada’s leadership and close coordination with the United States on sanctions and security assistance in Haiti, the State Department said on its website.
The US State Department also welcomed the US commitment, reaffirmed by the Secretary during the meeting, to building the capacity of the Haitian National Police, providing humanitarian assistance and supporting a Haitian-led political agreement.
The call between the foreign ministers comes on the eve of the summit of North American leaders to be held later this month in Mexico City, where issues such as migration are expected to be addressed as the United States has seen a significant increase in the number of Immigrants entering through its southern border, which separates it from Mexico.
