Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski loses in doubles at the Stuttgart Open

STUTTGART, Germany – Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her Brazilian partner Luisa Stefani are eliminated in women’s doubles at the Stuttgart Tennis Open.

In the quarter-finals, Dabrowski and Stefani lost in two sets 7:5, 7:6 (4) against the tandem of Alexa Guarachi from Chile and Erin Routliffe from New Zealand.

Dabrowski and Stefani won just 45 percent of the points on their second serves, well below the 80 percent success rate of their opponents in similar circumstances.

Dabrowski, who hails from Ottawa, is currently seventh in women’s doubles.

Dabrowski, 31, has 13 WTA Tour doubles titles but has yet to make it past the quarterfinals of any tournament this year.

Swiatek reaches the quarterfinals

Individual favorite Iga Swiatek defeated Zheng Qinwen 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Swiatek played his first game since the semifinals in Indian Wells last month due to a rib injury. She missed the Miami Open and the Poland playoffs in Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers.

After a bye in the first round, Swiatek started his clay court season smoothly. She easily won the first set before seeing Zheng come from a 1-3 deficit in the second set to even the odds at 4-4. Swiatek broke her rival’s serve in the next game before closing the books on serve.

In the next round Swiatek meets the Czech Karolina Pliskova, who defeated the Croatian Donna Vekic 6:2, 6:7 (5), 7:6 (5).

The American Coco Gauff, sixth in the world, surrendered to Anastasia Potapova 6: 2, 6: 3.

Potapova saved six break points and used three of Gauff’s 13 break points.

Gauff participated in his first tournament since splitting from his coach Diego Moyano.

Meanwhile, Paula Badosa secured a quarterfinal match with world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in a 6-1, 6-2 win over Spain’s Cristina Bucsa.

Finally, Beatriz Haddad Maia got her ticket to a quarterfinal duel against Ons Jabeur after Elena Rybakina was let down during their game. Haddad Maia was leading 6-1, 3-1 when Rybakina resigned.
