Canada’s Kerri Einarson won another bronze medal at the World Women’s Curling Championship.
Einarson defeated Sweden 8-5 on Sunday. Canada also won the bronze medal at this tournament last year after beating Sweden 8-7.
The Canadian four went into the preliminary round with a 7:5 record. After defeating Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa 6-4 in the qualifying match, he lost 5-8 to Norway’s Marianne Roervik in the semifinals on Saturday.
“I’m looking forward to coming here and winning a medal,” said Einarson. I know it’s not gold like we wanted, but at least it’s a medal. Winning the bronze medal two years in a row is something special. »
Canada opened the game with two goals in the first end. A steal in the second end and two more in the fourth gave the Maple Leafs a 6-1 lead.
Sweden scored twice in the sixth end and added one in the eighth final to cut Canada’s lead to 8-4. The Swedes stole a point in the ninth end but didn’t get any closer.
Captain Einarson’s team also includes Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard, Briane Harris and Krysten Karwacki. The coach is Reid Carruthers.
“To be able to win the bronze medal this week without our best performance means a lot to our team,” said Birchard. We want to come back and fight for gold. Of course we were hoping to make it this week but it wasn’t in sight so we’re looking forward to next year. »
In the tournament final, Switzerland successfully defended their title with a 6:3 win over Norway.
