OTTAWA – Treasury Secretary Chrystia Freeland said Canada will halt all government-led activities at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) after a Canadian citizen submitted his resignation to the financial institution.
Bob Pickard announced in a Twitter post on Wednesday that he had resigned as head of global communications at the bank because the institution was being “dominated” by members of the Chinese Communist Party.
The bank called the allegations “categorically false” in a statement, saying, “No state or political party has any say in the strategic or operational direction of the bank.”
Canada joined the AIIB in 2017 and holds less than one percent of the voting rights, in contrast to China, which holds more than a quarter of the voting rights.
Chrystia Freeland said she has asked the Treasury Department to conduct an “immediate review” of the allegations and Canada’s involvement in the bank.
The finance minister said the review would be carried out “quickly” and did not rule out an outcome at the end.
